Dass Taurin die antikonvulsive Wirkung der GABA-A-Agonisten Muscimol und Pentobarbital potenzieren kann, wiesen jetzt Forscher im Hippocampus der Maus (4. - 7. postnataler Tag) nach: Experimentell induzierte epileptiforme Entladungen wurden durch 0,5 und 5 μmol/l Muscimol verringert. 0,1 und 0,5 mmol/l Taurin hatten allein eine prokonvulsive, bei gleichzeitiger Gabe von Muscimol jedoch eine antikonvulsive Wirkung. Zudem wurde die antikonvulsive Wirkung von 100 und 200 μmol/l Pentobarbital in Gegenwart von 0,5 μmol/l Taurin verstärkt. Die Modulation der GABA-A-Rezeptoren durch Taurin könnte therapeutisch nutzbar sein.
